What a week! I had a chance at manning the showers one day, which was harder than it sounds! Although there are signs on the shower doors saying “No longer than 15 minutes”, if it's raining outside, the service users tend to stay in for a little longer (and who can blame them?). Luckily, I'd shadowed Jane a few days earlier so knew that there was no room for timid knockers and just about managed to keep to the times allocated.
On another day, Adam (the Mental Health Project Worker) thought it would be a good idea for me to sit at reception. After filling the drawers with tubes of toothpaste, toothbrushes, razors, shaving foam and pens that worked, I felt quite prepared....admittedly, knowing that my colleagues were all nearby helped a great deal. Between handing out the toiletries, watching to see that the signing in book was being filled in and answering questions, I noted that Francine seemed to know the sixty or seventy service users that came in, by either name or face. That was amazing. Also, being able to sit down for this stint was actually quite a treat!
