The lack of available housing is not a new issue. The shortage of ‘move-on’ accommodation is a reality which many vulnerably housed and homeless people are facing. Broadway decided to come up with an alternative solution, and since 2006 has been working with the private rented sector under its innovative Real Lettings scheme.
Patrick is one client whose life has turned around because of this scheme. He became homeless after a string of violent attacks on his home in South London forced him to move out and onto the streets. For 3 months, Patrick slept rough around central London before a place was found in a hostel. Patrick regularly met his hostel support worker to discuss the future and the best ways to reach his goals. More than anything he wanted to find a safe place to live.
Patrick’s support worker referred him to Real Lettings. Real Lettings helped Patrick to find a one bedroom flat and provided him with support through the process of his move. This enabled Patrick to manage the changes brought about by resettlement, and nearly a year on, Patrick is living happily in his flat in Lewisham. He enjoys spending time in his garden and is thinking about planting some vegetables.
I got a really nice flat shortly after being referred to Real Lettings. Real Lettings has given me a really good start living in my own place. I get on really well with my landlord and he has been helpful when I’ve needed him to sort things out.
