Refugees and Asylum Seekers

Pathways: the routes of refugees and asylum seekers

November 2006

The report was funded by the London Housing Foundation. It explores the experiences of a small sample of refugee and asylum seeker residents in single homeless accommodation. In doing so it considers housing history, advice and support networks, the extent to which people have settled in the UK and their future aspirations.

The research is a follow up to the 2004 survey conducted by Broadway and also funded by the London Housing Foundation. This was a brief snapshot survey to clarify the extent to which generic homelessness services were being asked to meet the needs of refugees and asylum seekers.

One of the key findings:

On a one night count, refugees and asylum seekers accounted for a fifth of the 2,431 bed spaces in fifty-eight participating residential projects for homeless people.

The research findings fed into the Home Office’s ‘Integration Matters’ agenda concerning the prevention of refugee homelessness.
