‘I Can’: demonstrating soft outcomes for homeless and vulnerable adult learners
2007
This research project, from Round Two of the NRDC Practitioner-Led Research Initiative, looked at what the key soft outcomes of learning were for homeless and vulnerable adults, and developed a measurement tool for these. The project also looked at links between these outcomes and the national curricula for literacy, numeracy and ESOL, and determined how the outcomes monitoring could be integrated into Individual Learning Plans.
We used an action research approach, which ensured that learners’ experiences of the tool, and its integration into service delivery, were central to the research.
The resulting toolkit has been integrated into Broadway’s key working model for working with all clients, enabling us to move beyond needs-based assessment to a fuller view of clients’ confidence, motivation and self-esteem relating to themselves, their life and their relationships.
