Broadway’s Befriending and Mentoring service has been running successfully for a number of years now. However, the service is currently on hold and unfortunately we are unable to recruit any more volunteers for the service at present.

We hope this is only a temporary measure and that we can re-start this service soon. We’re sorry we can’t get you involved at the moment – thank you for your interest and please keep returning to the website for further updates.

Broadway’s award winning Befriending and Mentoring service involves matching up Broadway clients and volunteers in a one-to-one relationship to meet on a weekly basis for a time-limited period (normally 6months).

  • Befriending seeks to reduce the social isolation of vulnerable adults and develop their social and communication skills.
  • Mentoring provides support to enable clients to gain the skills and confidence to achieve specific learning or employment goals.

All our volunteers are selected carefully through application forms, interviews, CRB checks and references and receive essential training prior to matching, as well as on-going supervision and support during the programme.

Broadway's Befriending Service is accredited with the Approved Provider Standard (APS) by the Mentoring and Befriending Foundation.

The APS is the national benchmark for organisations providing one-to-one volunteer mentoring or befriending. It is supported by the Cabinet Office and the Department for Education and Skills; and meeting the APS standard signifies competence and safe practise in mentoring or befriending.

Broadway is the first organisation in the homelessness sector to achieve the APS for Befriending.

Client Comment

“I have learnt not to take on other people’s issues and to walk away. I have more of an understanding of others, an insight, not just tunnel vision. I have more of a bond with people.”

Befriender Feedback

“I found the experience broke down any prejudices / stereotypes I had held around homelessness, drug users and people suffering from a mental illness and it’s been an experience I shall hold dear to my heart for the rest of my life.”

I'm glad I'm housed, it's a lovely flat - I've got a flat on the ground floor which is what I needed.
