Recycling for Broadway

Fancy a spring clean?
By rummaging through your wardrobe or getting rid of your old mobile phone, you can help people who are homeless in London.

"My experience as a volunteer at Broadway has been fantastic.  Everyone made me feel very welcome, I was given regular supervision sessions which helped me develop my role and make my work more effective"

Dan Ware, former Broadway volunteer

Volunteering with Broadway

We offer a range of volunteering opportunities, which include befriending, facilitating activities, interpreting for clients, admin, research and helping out in our hostels, resource rooms and daycentre.

All volunteers receive training and ongoing support to develop their skills and competence. Broadway pays all volunteers travel expenses (including training, supervision and evaluation sessions). Volunteers can claim up to £4.00 for food bought over a lunchtime shift.

As a volunteer you will have the opportunity to meet new people, face new challenges and make a significant contribution to combating homelessness. Volunteering at Broadway will enable you to develop your skills and experience within a dynamic, positive, friendly and supportive working environment.

Current volunteering opportunities are listed below:

Language Volunteer (polish speaking)
Resource Room Volunteer
Quality and Information Volunteer

Befriending

Volunteer befrienders are paired with Broadway clients and they meet regularly, offering one-to-one support. Broadway facilitates the relationship which enables befrienders to help clients develop social and independent living skills.

Case Study

Bill lived a very isolated life, spending most of his time alone inside his flat. We paired him with Jack for a 6 month befriender relationship. Jack spent time with Bill, talking to him and going for walks. With Jack's help, Bill was able to take small steps towards reducing his isolation. He now has the confidence to go out alone.

‘Bill' (Client) “We visited the internet café and went for walks .The best time we spent together was when we had topical discussions because this gave me a chance to express myself”.

‘Jack' (Befriender) “It has been a good experience to be able to offer some support to somebody trying to make positive changes to their life.”

If you would like to apply to become a volunteer befriender, please read the role description and fill out the volunteer application form.

The Closing date for current applications is 12th March 2008

Recycling for Broadway

Another way to help Broadway and our clients is to give gifts in kind. If you give us your unwanted goods or clothes, we can make valuable use of them.

Clothing

Almost two thirds of those who come to our Broadway Centre in West London have had a history of sleeping on the streets. The Broadway Centre keeps a supply of good quality second hand clothes for people who are living on the streets. Many find the service we offer invaluable.

It may not seem much to you but rummaging through your wardrobe and boxing up those old winter woollies and socks could make a real difference to someone who is living on the streets.

We require all types of clothing, but particularly:

  • Men’s clothing - shirts, jumpers, trousers, socks, underwear, shoes
  • Jeans
  • Blankets
  • Coats
  • Women’s casual clothing - lightweight jackets, t-shirts

To find out where to deliver the clothes, or to contact the Centre directly call 0208 735 5810

"I would hope that our modest donations are helping to keep out the cold and bring a little dignity to the person who receives our gifts"

Mary, a Broadway donor

Mobile Phones

Thinking about throwing your old mobile away? How about recycling it instead of putting it in the bin (one cadmium battery alone can pollute over 600,000 litres of water)?

We have many clients who would benefit from having a phone but cannot afford one or do not have a permanent address. By providing a mobile phone, you enable our clients to remain in contact with their support worker. Not only can they call us in emergencies but it allows the support worker and other agencies an opportunity to contact them, as it is often difficult to get messages to our clients.

Contact the Fundraising Team on 020 7089 9502 or send your phones to Broadway’s Central Office. Click here for contact details and address.
