Broadway was created on the 1st April 2002 from the merger of Riverpoint and Housing Services
Agency, two of London’s homeless agencies.
Riverpoint was based in West London and had been at the forefront of the campaign to provide
shelter and support to homeless and vulnerable people since 1977. The charity housed
and cared for nearly 1 500 single homeless people each year. In addition to the housing
and support Riverpoint provided, its West London Contact and Assessment Team was the
capital’s most successful Rough Sleepers Unit contracted Team providing outreach, assessment
and support for long-term rough sleepers as part of the Government’s Rough Sleepers Initiative.
Housing Services Agency which was based in Camden promoted successful resettlement since
1981, by providing services both directly to homeless people and to agencies who worked
with them. Direct provision included flats and bedsits for 330 homeless people in 11 London
boroughs. The organisation was at the forefront of the Rough Sleepers Initiative delivering
the Clearing House and managing CHAIN, previously the Rough Sleepers Register.
Both organisations had a history of working closely together and enjoyed a productive
partnership in which each complemented the other. With over 45 years combined experience,
the decision to merge was a natural yet exciting step forward and in April 2002 the new
organisation Broadway was created.
Broadway works with over 2 000 homeless and vulnerable people each year. With a total
turnover now in excess of £9 000 000 and a staffing complement of over 180 people, Broadway
provides an holistic range of services enabling the charity to take a unique position within
the field of homelessness.
